Why is the Book Sale at the Lakewood Branch Library named for June Leftwich?
June Leftwich always loved books. After all her maiden name was Storey. June married Navy aviator James “Mac” Leftwich in 1952 and was busy raising their four children until Mac’s retirement from the military to Dallas in 1972. In 1974 June decided she needed a job to help now realtor husband put their four children through college. She thought it would only be temporary but she found she loved the Dallas Public Library and she advanced to circulation supervisor, liaison to the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, volunteer coordinator and head of the library bookstore and gift shop. June organized and supervised the highly successful Dallas Public Library used book sales resulting in thousands of dollars of funds for the library.
After retirement June managed the Mystery Bookstore in Snider Plaza. She was selected to serve on the Municipal Library Board, was president of the Friends of the Dallas of the Dallas Public Library and a member of the Lakewood Library Friends Board.
In 2004 the Lakewood Library Friends began the annual book sale that has raised thousands of dollars for the branch. The gargantuan task was made manageable by the organization template developed by June back when she ran the huge Dallas Public Library book sale in downtown Dallas.
The Lakewood Library Friends wish to honor June Leftwich for her many accomplishments, for her support of the Dallas Public Library and for the Lakewood branch by naming the annual Lakewood Library Friends Book Sale: The Lakewood Library Friends June Leftwich Book Sale.
