World War 2 is the backdrop for this wonderful NYT bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
Marie-Laure who lives with her father is blind. He builds for her a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and they flee to Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives. They carry with them a valuable treasure.

Meanwhile, in a poor German mining town, Werner grows up with his younger sister, and discovers by happenstance a talent for electronics. This wins him a place at a school for Hitler Youth, but he doesn't buy the cruel Nazi propaganda lessons they teach.  Werner enlists and travels through the heart of the war and, finally, to Saint-Malo, where he meets Marie-Laure.
A fabulous moving read. A. Adams.
